China reins in defence spending

Mar 4th, 2010 | By admin | Category: World News

Increase in China’s military budget is smallest for more than 20 years China announced its smallest increase in defence spending in more than two decades today, a likely result of both financial constraints and growing concern over perceptions of Beijing as a regional military threat. The planned 7.5% rise in defence spending in 2010 follows at least 20 years of double-digit increases in the budget for the People’s Liberation Army – the world’s largest standing military with more than 2.3 million members. Rapid military modernisation and the acquisition of cutting-edge jet fighters, warships and submarines have aroused suspicions in Washington, Tokyo, New Delhi and elsewhere over China’s intentions, fuelled by Beijing’s growing diplomatic assertiveness and economic might.

Family size has become the great unmentionable of the campaign for more environmentally friendly lifestyles Twelve years ago, the American author Bill McKibben published a short book entitled Maybe One: A Personal And Environmental Argument For Much Smaller Families. It certainly has its faults: most obviously, it provides a little too much information about the vasectomy McKibben decided to have in lieu of a second child. But it isn’t pious or hectoring; if anything, the author tries overly hard to be tentative, emphasising that he isn’t seeking to dictate other people’s choices, and doesn’t think he has all the answers

• High-powered beams were mounted on plane • Defence test success 30 years after Reagan plan The US this week achieved a goal that has eluded it since Ronald Reagan’s Star Wars programme by knocking out a ballistic missile using a high-powered laser beam mounted on a plane. The successful test was carried out yesterday in California, the US Missile Defence Agency (MDA) said, making real what had previously been confined to the realms of science fiction.

Press secretary scrawls grocery list on hand after ex-Alaska governor uses ‘palm-o-prompter’ at Tea Party convention The Washington political playbook typically advises presidents not to debate sniping from critics at every turn. But Barack Obama’s political staff could not resist the opportunity to hit back at Sarah Palin after she was seen to have written crib notes on the palm of her hand at a gathering of conservative activists. Speaking at a question and answer session on Saturday, the former US vice-presidential candidate and ex-Alaska governor, inadvertently revealed that she had written the words “energy”, “budget cuts”, and “lift American spirit” on her palm
